A part of the Asaba multi-purpose sports hall at the Stephen Keshi Stadium billed to play host to the forthcoming 21st National Sports Festival (NSF) in Delta State has collapsed.

The complex under construction ahead of the biennial sports festival reportedly collapsed yesterday morning.

Daily Trust gathered that unspecified number of workers at the construction site sustained injuries and were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

The collapsed building under construction is among the facilities being prepared for the 21st National Sports Festival (NSF) to be hosted in the state beginning from November 28.

Daily Trust also gathered that there was a little drama at the scene of the incident as a top official of the Delta State Sports Commission allegedly ordered some thugs to stop journalists from covering the rescue operation.

While reacting to the incident, the Delta State Government through the commissioner for information, Charles Aniagwu, said no life was lost in the incident.

He explained that the accident which left a worker slightly injured was caused by the misalignment of the crane by its operator which led to the heavy-duty equipment crashing on the wall of one of the floors. 

It will be recalled that the collapsed building was recently inspected by the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, who gave a pass mark and said the facilities were 80% ready for use.

However, some structural engineers had expressed concerns over the speed at which the construction was going, doubting the solidity of the structures under construction.
