The Gombe State Council of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) has disbursed the sum of N1m as scholarship to its members that are currently studying in various institutions within and outside the country.

Speaking at the flagging off of the scholarship scheme yesterday in Gombe, the state NCSU Chairman, Comrade Muhammadu Buhari, said scheme was introduced as part of capacity building for civil servants in order to enhance their productivity.

He said 44 members would benefit from the first batch of the scheme, while over 500 others would be considered in the subsequent batches, adding that the union would also sponsor PhD applicants among its members.

“To benefit from the scholarship, applicant must be active member and financial contributor to the union. Again, the beneficiary must be on in-service and studying in a recognised institution,” he said.

Comrade Buhari outlined late released of check-off dues as one of the challenges bedeviling civil servants in the state.

However, he commended Gombe state government for prompt payment of salaries to workers.

Flagging the scholarship scheme, the state Head of Service, Alhaji Adamu Haruna Abubakar, described the scheme as a challenge to other labour unions in the state.

He urged labour leaders to desist from confrontational approach while pressing for their demands from the government, noting that dialogue has always been a peaceful way of resolving issues.
