No fewer than 14, 950 farmer cooperative groups in Kano state received agricultural inputs support under Fadama III project to boost food production in the state.

The project, according to its state coordinator, Alhaji Shuaibu Sulaiman, is a World Bank supported project in collaboration with the federal government of Nigeria.

Speaking during the 8th Joint World Bank/FG meeting to review the activities of the project in the last six months in the state, the coordinator said the beneficiaries were selected from the 44 local government areas of the state and were supported with fertilizer, improved seeds and other inputs to boost food production capacity.

“The purpose of the programme is to support the poor with a view to empowering them to improve their socio-economic status. That is why we have included divorcees and widows among the beneficiaries and we supported them with water pumps and improved tomato, rice and sorghum seeds,” he said.

Sulaiman also said through project 500 tricycles were also distributed to unemployed graduates which they used for commercial purpose to transport farm produce from farms to various markets in the state.

In his remarks, the Task Team leader, World Bank, Dr Adetunji Oridipe said the project had boosted the production of the selected commodities in addition to reducing their importation, adding that the meeting would serve as an avenue to convene series of development and legacies that would ensure continuity of the project.
