Staff of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, (NICO), North-Central Zone comprising six states were gaily dressed in indigenous attires as they marked this year’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, recently in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The staff also cooked different indigenous cuisines which were given away as prizes to those considered appropriately dressed to mark the occasion.
In his address, the Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Ohi Ojo said the event is an opportunity to help communities understand the value of cultural diversity and learn how to live together in harmony.
Ojo said celebrating Cultural Diversity Day means opening new perspectives for sustainable development and promoting creative industries and cultural entrepreneurship as sources of millions of jobs worldwide which is particularly for young people and women.
He also said the Day provides an opportunity to deepen the understanding of the values of cultural diversity and advance the four goals of the UNESCO convention on the protection and promotion of the Diversity of Cultural expressions adopted on 20th October 2005.
In his welcome address, head of Orientation and Cultural Affairs Department, Mr. Levi Aladeitan said culture is central to every development and that is the reason NICO, the apex cultural institute in Nigeria, was established to conduct research into all aspects of culture, document them and orientate people on how to make culture a vector for national development and most importantly now, as an alternative source of business worthy of employing, investing and boosting national economy.
He commended the efforts of the Zonal Coordinator, for pulling the little resources at his disposal together to mark the Day.
