Argentina came from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 encounter at the Atlanta stadium.

Enzo Fernandez scored the winning goal in added time to break Egyptian hearts in a drama-filled match that saw Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico give Egypt a two-goal lead before a late comeback that had three goals in 12 minutes to put Egypt out of the tournament.

Ibrahim put Egypt in front on 15 minutes when Ibrahim powered home Marwan Attia’s cross with a stunned Argentina goalkeeper motionless as the ball flew into the net.

Argentina had the chance for an equalizer when the World Cup holders were awarded a penalty for foul on Nicolas Tagliafico, but Lionel Messi’s spotkick was expertly saved by Mostafa Shobeir. The goalkeeper also produced an excellent stop to deny Julian Alvarez as Egypt went into the break with the lead.

Hossam Hassan’s side though it had doubled the lead through Zico who finished off a swift counter attack, but the referee ruled out the goal after VAR review. Egypt would eventually double the lead and Zico, his goal, slotting home Haissem Hassan’s cutback.
Argentina mounted a comeback and they scored twice in four minutes, Christian Romero headed home Messi’s cross on 79 minutes before the 39-year-old Messi equalized with a shot on the half volley in the 83rd minute, before Fernandez’s header won it three minutes into added time to send Argentina into the quarter-final where they will meet either Colombia or Switzerland.
