Egypt advanced into the round 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 4-2 penalty shootout win over Australia at the Dallas stadium.

The match had ended 1-1 after extra-time, with Emam Ashour’s opener cancelled by an own goal in the first-ever competitive meeting between both nations.

The Pharaohs advance into the round of 16 stage for the first time in their World Cup history, and Hossam Hassan’s side also joined Morocco as the second African nation to reach the last-16 stage at the ongoing tournament.

Egypt score their first-ever goal in the knockout round of the World Cup through Emam Ashour on 13 minutes, the winger headed Karem Hafez’s cross into the net to hand Egypt a dream start.

The Pharaohs continued to dominate but could not add to their tally, and were punished for lapse in concentration by Australia on 55 minutes. A well-delivered free kick floated into the heart of Egypt’s defence cause havoc and led to Mohamed Hany heading into his own net for 1-1. Hany becomes only the second player in World Cup history to score two own goals in a single tournament.

Egypt recovered to dominate the later stage of the match, and Australia needed a word-class save from their goalkeeper Patrick Beach who produced a reaction save to tip Ramy Rabia’s effort over the bar to send the match into extra-time where both sides could not find the winner and had to settle for penalties.

Harry Soutter and Lucas Herrington both blazed their kicks wide and Egypt converted all four spot kicks to claim the win as they remain unbeaten in North America.

The will face the winner of the last-32 tie between Cape Verde and Argentina on June 7.
