World football’s governing body, FIFA, has appointed a team of South African match officials to handle the 2026 World Cup playoff fixture between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Panthers of Gabon.

According to the appointment list released by FIFA, Tom Abongile will serve as the centre referee, with Zakhele Siwela as assistant referee, while Akhona Makalima has been designated as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

The development comes amid a tense footballing relationship between Nigeria and South Africa following the outcome of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Bafana Bafana pipped Nigeria to the automatic qualification spot in Group C, sparking intense rivalry between both nations’ football bodies and fan bases.

The controversy deepened earlier when South Africa’s qualification came under scrutiny after FIFA penalised the team for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in a match against Lesotho. Despite losing points from that decision, South Africa still secured the group’s top position.

Some Nigerian football analysts and stakeholders have questioned FIFA’s choice, citing potential bias concerns due to recent tensions between the Nigerian and South African football federations.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, was recently quoted expressing his personal wish for Nigeria not to qualify for the World Cup — a comment that further heightened the sensitivity surrounding the appointment.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Gabon in the semi-final round of the playoffs at the El Barid Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday next week.

Nigeria will be hoping to overcome the Panthers and edge closer to securing one of Africa’s final tickets to the 2026 FIFA World Cup jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
