Vinicius Jr. was the saviour as Brazil battled to a 1-1 draw with Morocco in their first group match on Saturday night.
The Real Madrid star provided a brilliant goal from nothing to equalize in a period Morocco were slicing through the Brazilians’ midfield and defence.
Ismael Saibari scored with a deft lob over onrushing Alisson Becker from Brahim Diaz’s defence splitting pass for 1-0, and the Atlas Lions should have scored more but missed a host of chances, including captain Achraf Hakimi arrowing a low shot narrowly wide.
The Brazilians have Neymar Jr. in US and the veteran superstar’s stardust was seen in his comrade, Vinicius, who pulled a goal out of nothing to restore parity. He capitalized on space in the box to cut onto his favourite right foot before sending a curling shot beyond Bounou for 1-1.
The match finished without further goals, but Morocco showed its readiness for the tournament, while Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil will be punished by a more clinical side if they repeat their display in this match.
In other matches, Scotland claimed their first World Cup win in 26 years on their return to the global stage after a 28-year absence.
John McGinn netted the Tartan Army’s winning goal in the 28th minute with a deflected strike for their first three points since Italy 1990.
Australia were also winners in the early hours of Sunday, a shock 2-0 win over Turkey despite parading ten World Cup debutants. Nestory Irankunda netted the first half opener to become the youngest World Cup goalscorer for the Socceroos, while Connor Metcalfe sealed the unlikely win in the 75th minute when he pounced on an error to slam a low shot.
It puts Tony Popovic’s side in good position to reach the knockout rounds in consecutive tournaments.
