The Kano State Indigenous Waste Management Association (KIWMA) has embarked on a one-week street and drainage clearance in the Kano metropolis to mark the 2023 World Environment Day.

The exercise, which was flagged off at the Golden Jubilee Roundabout, will focus on refuse and plastic evacuation from major streets to prevent blockage of streets and drains.

The Chairman of KIWMA, Dr Bala Muhammad, said the gesture was to join their global counterparts to ensure a clean environment to cushion the effects of climate change.

He noted that as the rains were about to intensify, the public should take sanitation seriously, saying the rains came with a lot of danger such as flooding and diseases.

He explained that, “Today is a special day for all in the world as it relates to the environment and how we can get rid of dangers associated with waste. This year’s theme is ‘Solutions to Plastic Waste’; that is what we are creating awareness to the public towards mitigating this global phenomenon.

“It’s the rainy season and people are aware of the stagnation of waterways and how plastic waste, especially the lighter ones, are flooding the waterways. That is why we are sweeping the major streets; and it will be held for seven days from today.”

He, therefore, urged the public to complement the government’s effort by ensuring that they reduced the use of plastic and ensured that refuse was dumped in appropriate places.
