The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) in Kano state has urged farmers not to entertain any fear following the reported outbreak of some worms that invaded farms in some parts of the state.
The state AFAN chairman, Alhaji Faruk Rabi’u made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Friday.
He said there was no need for farmers in the state to fear anything as the the worms are not as dangerous as the pest that invaded and destroyed tomato farms about two years ago.
“This worm species are not as dangerous as Tuta Absoluta, the pest that ravaged tomato farms in some states in the northern part of the country two years ago.
“The worms are easy to kill as a farmer can use insecticide for N1, 000 to spry one hectare of farmland. So farmers should not wait for the government to do everything for them,” Rabi’u said.
He said association would soon commence public enlightenment campaign on what farmers should do to prevent the spread of the worms in the farms affected.
He said the sensitisation campaign was necessary in order to educate farmers on how to eliminate the pest before spreading to other parts of their farms.
He said the campaign was also aimed at sensitising farmers on the need for them to make personal effort to stop the spread of the worms without necessarily waiting for the government.
He, therefore, advised farmers in the state not to fear as a result of the outbreak of the worms as they (farmers) could control the situation themselves without spending much. (NAN)
