When two people start dating, they are carried away by lots of things they share in common or like about each other. Those things seem to create the foundation for their love to grow and germinate into something more permanent. However, one thing they often overlook (until it’s probably too late) is how ambitious their partner is.
Wanting to always grow and better your life is difficult when you have a spouse who is comfortable with the normal. It can be frustrating living with someone who is indifferent to your passion, plans, ambitions, and dreams. Everyone cherishes a partner who loves you, believes in what you do, contributes to your happiness, encourages you, and still have their own interests in life.
LifeXtra sought to know if people would marry/date a less ambitious person.
“First of all, if I am dating someone and I notice that he has no ambition, I would give him a ‘push’. In other words, I would motivate him to start something like a business or perhaps get a job so that he can have a meaningful life. Then I will make sure I stand by him and give him the moral support he needs to grow,” Peace Offor, a student, told LifeXtra.
Chimezie Nwoke, a photographer, stated that he can never marry an unambitious lady.
Buttressing his point, he said “Any lady who has little or no ambition can never be a good wife. In fact, the thought of even marrying her will not come to my mind at all.”
When LifeXtra sought to know how he would know if the lady is ambitious or not, he said “By their fruits, you will know them. If I see a lady who has no plans for the future, I will know because her attitude to life, the way she reacts to certain things will tell whether she is ambitious or not.”
Concurring with Nwoke, Mercy Edeh, a mother of two, said dating or marrying someone with little or no ambition is one of the greatest mistakes any person can make.
Explaining further, she said “The greatest mistake my daughters would make is getting married to someone who has little or no future, no goals, plans etc. Before they even marry the person, I would ensure that a thorough background check is done and also if the man in question is doing anything. If he is not, I will ask him what his plans are and if they are not reasonable enough, then he is not good enough for my daughter.”
Abuja-based hospitality consultant, Ikechukwu Charles, responded with an emphatic NO! “But if she is a goal-getter, then yes I will marry her. I will observe her for some time, then from our little conversations I will know whether she is truly a goal-getter and hard working or not.”
When asked how he would know if the lady is a goal-getter or not, he said “She has to be creative, innovative and focused. These three points are essential when dating someone, because this is the person you would want to spend the rest of your life with.”
“That is why I always tell people, especially my male friends, that they should always be observant, Of course men nowadays do not want to marry a woman who would be a liability, we prefer a lady who is hard working, has a purpose and even motivates and inspires us,” he concluded.
