Embattled Super Eagles will this evening face the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in the return leg of their double header 2021 AFCON qualifier in Freetown with nothing less than restoration of their badly bruised reputation in mind.
Highly rated in Africa and world football, the Super Eagles put up a dismal outing recently when they surrendered a four-goal lead to draw 4-4 with the lowly rated Leone Stars at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City.
Expectedly, the performance of the three-time African champions elicited wide condemnation from Nigerian football fans with some calling for the head of Gernot Rohr and his players.
Consequently, immediately after the match in Benin, the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick summoned the team’s technical crew after which he said he was not expecting anything less than 4-0 win in Freetown.
Similarly, other Nigerians are also expecting massive victory over the Leone Stars, if they are to be pacified, but a former Nigerian international, Garba Lawal is of the view that victory by even a single goal would be enough.
In a chat with Daily Trust, the Olympian said all that what matters most is victory that will fetch Nigeria the maximum points.
“I am aware of the huge expectations of Nigerian fans. Many of them want the Super Eagles to score many goals but I want to say, if one goal will give us victory, that will be enough.
“We all know that Nigerians always want their teams to win. Therefore, I understand how disappointed they were when the Super Eagles allowed the Leone Stars to hold them to a 4-4 draw in Benin City,” he said.
The Super Eagles still lead Group L with seven points and victory in Freetown could be enough to take them to Cameroon 2021.
