William Ifeanyi Moore, author of the novel ‘Lonely Roads’, enjoyed reading ‘Pathfinders: The Golden Age of Arab Science’, which tells the story of an older Arab world where Iraq was the centre of science and learning in the world. The book illustrates how a society’s attitude towards knowledge, good leadership, respect for differences, and freedom of intellectual inquiry can influence development.
“I could draw a lot of parallels with ancient Africa and I think such pages of history can teach us a lot about how to proceed in this modern day,” Moore says, adding that at a point in history Arabic was the language of science and words like Alkali and Algorithm have the prefix Al because they are of Arabic origin. “It’s really interesting stuff. I am currently in the middle of Chinua Achebe’s ‘There Was a Country’ and that has been a real eye opener for me already.”
