The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, Rinsola Abiola, has called for a comprehensive review of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

She said the proposed review aims to enhance access to justice, particularly for young people who are often disproportionately affected by the system.

Abiola made this call at an Access to Justice Roundtable meeting held in Abuja to mark the 2024 International Youth Day.

The event was organised by the Office of the SSA to President Tinubu in collaboration with the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF/LEAP Africa), the Public and Private Development Council (PPDC), and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

During her address, Abiola highlighted the need for reforms to ensure a more equitable justice system, noting that economic empowerment and education are crucial but must be complemented by robust protection of young people’s rights.

She said many incarcerated individuals are young people awaiting trial, a situation that underscores the need for legal and policy reforms.

Reflecting on her recent visit to Kuje Correctional Centre with the Minister of State for Youth Development, Hon. Ayodele Olawande, Abiola noted the significant presence of young people in the nation’s correctional facilities and the importance of addressing the factors contributing to their involvement in the justice system.

Abiola assured that the roundtable would produce actionable recommendations rather than merely discussing the issues.
