The popular Wuse Market in Abuja has reopened for business three days after being shut down following an outbreak of unrest.
Daily Trust had reported how the market was sealed by the authorities on Tuesday following violence triggered by the alleged killing of a hawker by an operative of the Nigeria Correctional Service.
The shooting resulted in the burning of about 10 shops owned by traders, as well as eight vehicles including a police van and that of a correctional facility, before it was shut down around 3:30pm of the fateful day.
The Public Relations Officer of the Abuja Market Management Limited (AMML), Innocent Obiechina, confirmed that the market was reopened around 12 noon on Friday.
He said the development followed stakeholders’ continued engagements at the office of the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Bennett Igwe, on Friday.
He noted that issues of security and economic reasons were considered in arriving at the decision.
“It was understood that the longer the facility was kept locked, the more people would suffer, and there could be multiple effects than could be imagined,” the PRO said in a phone conversation with our reporter.
