The Nigerian Army today announced a 4-day ban  on vehicular movement in Borno State in order to avert attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents during Christmas festivities.

The order banned trucks, cars, tricycles and motorcycles from plying roads with effect from 6pm tomorrow  (Wednesday) to 7am of Sunday, 28th December, 2014.

A statement from the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, signed by Colonel Sani Usman, a Deputy Director, Army Public Relations said the decision was taken following security reports indicating that the Boko Haram terrorists are making concerted efforts to unleash mayhem in some parts of Borno State and particular, Maiduguri, the state capital during Christmas.

According to the statement, “Consequent upon this, the Division in consultation with Borno State Government and other security agencies ban all all forms of vehicular movement in the state. During Christmas celebration.

“This measure becomes necessary in order to further safeguard lives and properties of law-abiding citizens in the state.”

The statement also called on citizens to be security cautious and report any suspicious person or movement to the nearest security agency.

“We wish to assure the good people of Borno State and in deed all abiding citizens that the military is doing all it could to route out terrorists causing mayhem in the society.

 Daily Trust reports that security within Nigerian capital, Abuja, has been beefed up with checking points mounted by soldiers in different parts of  the city.
