‘Yahoo boys’ protest against EFCC in Osun
Some youths said to be ‘Yahoo boys’, on Tuesday, staged a protest in Ilesa, Osun State, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the arrest of some of their members.
The youths barricaded the road in front of Ilesa West Local Government Secretariat and burnt tyres. The protest caused panic as it spread to other parts of the town and many commuters were stranded while shop owners could not display their wares.
The protesters claimed that EFCC operatives raided and arrested some of their colleagues in a hotel.
A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed shock that the Yahoo boys who were internet fraudsters could come out openly to protest against the anti-graft commission.
He said, “We know these boys as internet fraudsters that people call “Yahoo Yahoo”, and it’s a big surprise that they have the audacity to stage a public protest.”
EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwaujaren, could not be reached as he was not picking calls when our correspondent called for his reaction.
The state’s police spokesman, Yemisi Opalola, said policemen had been deployed to douse the tension and assured that the situation would be brought under control.
