Yakowa and the Kaduna challenge

Few months into office as governor of Kaduna state, Yakowa implemented the 30% increments for the state civil servants. With this increment, a level 1 step 1 worker now earns N8799 as against N6000 they received in the past. This increment by the Yakowa administration is hailed as the best and most effective increment made by any governor in Kaduna state. This development is a far cry from the state of neglect that had befallen the state civil servants welfare in the past. If not for anything, an average civil servant in Kaduna state can now afford to buy a bag of rice on a monthly basis. Thanks to dynamic governor Yakowa. People who do not see this as a great feat by the governor should not forget the fact that salary increase ensures adequate productivity on the part of workers which will in turn lead to rapid development of the state. Governor Yakowa also wasted no time in tackling the problem of some roads that cut across the state. He recently approved the construction of three feeder roads across the state. Construction of these roads represents another vista of the Yakowa administration which seeks to provide safe and fast mode of transportation for people plying them. The roads which links different parts of the state has remained abandoned for years with successive governments failing to look towards its direction. Today, construction of these roads has become a reality. As part of efforts to ease the daily traffic congestion on the existing bridges in the state capital, Yakowa recently awarded the contract for the construction of another bridge. Another area the governor deserves to be commended on is his reduction of this year’s Hajj fares to the tune of N52,200. This is the first of its kind in Kaduna state and Nigeria in general, as there is this general belief that when prices are set, they never come down. Past governments had tried but the situation still remained the same. The Yakowa government quickly responded by continuing the construction and renovation of various infrastructures and water works he inherited from past administrations. The result is gradually being felt as some areas in Zaria; mine inclusive now enjoy periodic supply of water after many years of suffering. Notably, the Yakowa administration has consistently showed creativity, quality ideas and encouraged capacity building of the state’s workforce. School teachers and local government employees are major beneficiaries of the capacity building programme of the Yakowa led administration as a host number of them are already taking part in the free I.C.T training programme of the state government. Also worthy to note is the fact that Yakowa has effectively managed the political environment in the state as he enjoys a good working relationship with the state legislators, this was demonstrated recently when the People’s Democratic Party caucus in the state house of assembly threw their weight behind him for the 2011 election. He has also succeeded in the sustenance of the security outfit code named Operation Yaki that was initiated by his predecessor. People of Kaduna still sleep with their two eyes closed. The Yakowa administration is just six months old, yet so much has changed. Little wonder, Yakowa is becoming more popular on a daily basis. Yes, so much has changed just within six months that looks like three years. Should we look carefully, we will see that Yakowa still has more to offer. My candid advice to the people of Kaduna state is to support governor Yakowa (Nakowa) in the 2011 general election so the state can move to the next phase of its development.
