Yamal scores first World Cup goals as spain thrash Saudi Arabia

Wonderkid Lamine Yamal scored his first FIFA World Cup goals as Spain cruised to a commanding 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their Group H clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The encounter at Atlanta Stadium provided the perfect stage for the 18-year-old Barcelona star to open his World Cup account, while Mikel Oyarzabal contributed two goals and an assist as Spain secured their first win of the tournament.

After being held to a surprise goalless draw by Cape Verde in their opening match, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente handed Yamal a starting role despite concerns over his match fitness.

The youngster repaid the faith in spectacular fashion, opening the scoring in the 10th minute when he slid in at the back post to convert Oyarzabal’s cross.

The goal made Yamal the second-youngest Spaniard to score in a major international tournament, behind Gavi at Euro 2024.

Spain effectively put the contest beyond Saudi Arabia before the midway point of the first half. Oyarzabal doubled the lead in the 21st minute, reacting quickest to Aymeric Laporte’s knockdown, before adding his second three minutes later with a composed finish from Dani Olmo’s through pass.

With the game firmly under control, De la Fuente withdrew both Yamal and Oyarzabal at halftime. However, Saudi Arabia found no respite as Spain added a fourth goal in the second half when defender Hassan Al Tambakti inadvertently turned a low cross into his own net.

The victory moved Spain to the top of Group H with four points from two matches. They will face Uruguay in their final group fixture seeking to secure a place in the knockout stage, while Saudi Arabia take on Cape Verde in their last group match.
