A massive yam store, a pickup van, and various valuable properties were destroyed after a fire gutted the residence of the Chief of Rafin-Daji, HRH Alhaji Musa Adamu.
Abuja Metro reports that Rafin-Daji is located in the Gurdi ward of the Abaji Area Council in the FCT.
The Secretary to the palace, Danjuma Saidu, said the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, around 2:12 am, while the chief was asleep.
Saidu said the cause of the fire remains unknown, adding that the “yam band” (storage structure) attached to the house was completely razed, destroying truckloads of stored yams and the chief’s pickup van, which was parked nearby.
According to Saidu, the chief had recently finished transporting his harvest from the farm to his home when the incident happened.
‘‘Early Saturday morning, the fire suddenly broke out in the storage area before spreading to the chief’s living quarters, destroying further valuables,’’ Saidu added.
He added that thick smoke billowing from the store alerted the chief, who rushed outside only to find the yams and the vehicle already engulfed in flames.
He said, ‘’Efforts by community members to extinguish the blaze were unsuccessful due to the harsh harmattan winds, which caused the fire to spread rapidly.
“In fact, nobody can say for sure what caused the fire, but we thank God that no lives were lost.’’
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, sent a delegation on Sunday to sympathize with the chief.
The delegation was led by the Council Secretary, Agaba Nuku, alongside the Supervisory Councilor for Health, Abdulkadir Yahaya Mamagi, and the Supervisory Councilor for Agriculture.
