A former Commissioner of Youth Empowerment in Gombe State, Malam Farouk Yarma, has called on the Governor of the state, Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, to save Gombe United from untimely exit from the Nigerian football scene.

Making the call in a statement issued yesterday, the proprietor of FC Yarmalight said as a concerned citizen of the state, he was deeply worried that with less than ten days to the commencement of the new season, Gombe United are yet to receive the required attention from the government.

He said due to lack of support, most of the good players in Gombe United have left the club in search of greener pastures thereby leaving behind a depleted side that may not survive in the new season.

Yarma reiterated that he was left with no option than to cry out on behalf of the management committee of the club because Gombe United belongs to everyone as he said it embodies the heritage and identity of the people.

“It is with great concern that I have observed the lack of adequate financial support from the state government, which has ultimately led to the club’s sudden decline. This decline will be detrimental to the good image of the state.

“The management of the club, due to lack of sufficient funds, has been rendered helpless and ineffective. Presently, the club lacks a competent technical crew, as well as a dedicated bus for the players. Moreover, the departure of talented players for greener pastures has further exacerbated the team’s predicament.

“Your Excellency, while it is true that the management may have their shortcomings as individuals, it is crucial to recognize that Gombe United is more than just a collection of people. It embodies our heritage and identity.

“I, therefore, implore you to take the necessary actions to rectify this situation. Like I mentioned earlier, Gombe United is the pride of the state and should not be allowed to go into oblivion,” he said.

The former pioneer chairman of Gombe State Sports Commission, therefore, called on the governor to show more than casual interest in the club as he maintained that the fall of Gombe United will have far reaching political implications for the governor.

It will be recalled that after struggling to maintain their place in the Nigerian topflight, the Technical Adviser of Gombe United, Zubair Aliyu, left the club to join relegated El-Kanemi Warriors.
