Yellow fever: NMA tasks Edo govt on vaccination

The Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Chapter, Dr Omoifo Valentine, has called on the state government to open yellow fever centres and provide the necessary vaccines for proper vaccination in order to prevent the spread of the disease in the state.

He said there is currently no known cure for the disease but can be prevented, adding that nine persons have been confirmed infected with disease.

Addressing journalists in Benin yesterday, Dr. Valentine, said the out break was recorded in Uhunmwonde, Esan West and Esan Central local government areas of the state.

“We are aware that about nine cases have been tested positive for the disease following preliminary investigation by relevant agencies of government and await confirmation from the WHO Regional Reference Laboratory,” he said.

He however gave some of the symptoms of the isease to include high fever, jaundice, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain among others.

Dr Valentine advised the people not to panic if they notice any of the above symptoms but report to the nearest health facility for supportive management and proper referral for the management of the complications.

He assured that the association is in touch with the state ministry of health and other relevant government agencies who he said are already working to control the situation.

On his part, the state commissioner for health, Dr David Osifo said a team of experts have been deployed to the area to curtail the ailment.
