Many Nigerians think the president travelled to Israel to strengthen bilateral relations. Others are of the view that our president went there to solicit help in curbing the problem of insurgency in Nigeria. Call the trip what you will, I am of the view that Jonathan travelled to Israel to commune with God.
While there, president as my representative anywhere in the world should do us the favour of praying for Nigeria.
 This may take many forms. The prayer would be to tackle the security challenges Nigeria is facing. In the north alone, thousands of lives have been lost and property worth billions destroyed either due to religious crisis or ethnic conflict. Again, innocent lives have been bombed or are still being targeted in the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency. He should pray to God to protect Nigerians from the evils of both Boko Haram in the north and militants in the Niger-Delta.
In the Daily Trust Monday Column of this week, Mahmud Jega wrote an article titled ‘Smell of the whitewash’, in which said that ‘A man who is about to embark on pilgrimage may have a slightly distorted picture of this world.’ The question that comes to mind is: how? The president’s face takes a saint-like look or somewhat sinless smile. Therefore we might conclude that God has entered the president’s heart and his prayers answered.
It is true that our lord saviour has blessed our country with abundant mineral resources; we are the largest exporter of oil in Africa, we have agricultural land, we have human capital. Yet, we have among other problems distorting the forward-ever march of this country to the promise land. The problem is of leadership, and leaders who buy bullet proof cars in fear of their lives. He should pray to God to change the bad leaders with good leaders. Leaders that will accept in public what they will accept in private. Leaders that can drive us safely to the promise land. We don’t want leaders that will steal our wealth and fly it over to UK, US, Switzerland and other developed countries.
Jonathan should also seek divine help in tackling the problems of power, poor communications and transportation, bad roads, decay in infrastructure, collapse of education, health, poverty, unemployment, and media criticism. Decay in the aviation sector, corruption and fraud in the public sectors.
