The Yobe State Government has approved the enrollment of retired state and local government civil servants into its Social Equity Programme to expand access to quality healthcare for pensioners.
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (YSCHMA), Dr. Babagana Tijjani, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Damaturu, the state capital.
He said the approval followed a proposal submitted by the agency to extend health insurance coverage to retired civil servants as part of the state government’s broader social protection and healthcare reform agenda.
Dr Tijjani described the initiative as a people-centred intervention designed to improve the quality of life of retirees by guaranteeing affordable, accessible and quality healthcare services.
The YSCHMA boss described the approval as a major breakthrough in healthcare financing in the state, saying it underscores Governor Buni’s commitment to policies that prioritise citizens’ welfare.
He said the agency had commenced preparations for the implementation of the programme through a transparent enrollment process in collaboration with pension unions, relevant government agencies and accredited healthcare providers to ensure seamless access to healthcare services for eligible retirees.
The approval, he added, further reinforces the state government’s commitment to implementing social welfare programmes aimed at improving the living standards of pensioners and other vulnerable groups while strengthening healthcare delivery across the state.
