The programme was suspended and the action had led to several environmental challenges including blockage of drainages with filth and construction of sewages on the roads.

Commissioner for Environment, Alhaji Wakili Sarki, said following approval of the state government, his ministry had constituted the State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation.

“Members of the committee will provide their expertise in order to create sanitation consciousness among our people by organising monthly environmental cleanup exercises to be observed on the last Saturday of every month,” the commissioner said.

He said the essence of the task force which included members of the Civil Defence, Peace Corps and officials of the local government environmental committees, was to enforce the Environmental Sanitation Edict of the state.

“Solid waste management is paramount to a successful and healthy human development and expansion, the attitude of our people on environmental sanitation has manifested in many forms. This includes among others, indiscriminate littering of the environment, dumping of refuse into public drainages, open defecation amongst others,” the commissioner observed.
