The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YIEC) has proposed N500 million for the conduct of a local government council election.

Daily Trust gathered that the LG election, which was earlier scheduled for November 25 has now been May 25 2024.

The executive chairman of the commission, Dr Mamman Muhammad, stated this to newsmen at the stakeholders meeting in Damaturu, the state capital.

He said the political parties would be issued with the election guidelines to enable them to field suitable candidates for good governance at the grassroots level.

He said each of the candidates must possess a minimum of secondary school certificate, and be a resident of the community he wished to contest election, among others.

He added that each contestant for chairmanship would pay a fee of N300,000, while those contesting for vice chairmanship and councillorship would pay N250,000 and N200,000 respectively.

Dr Mamman reiterated the commitment of the commission to conduct credible, free, fair and peaceful elections in the state.

Meanwhile, the major political parties in the state have agreed to the postponement of the LG election to next year.

The state chairman of the Interparty Advisory Council (IPAC), Bala Muhammad, said the council, which contained the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties have agreed with the action of YIEC to conduct the election in May 2024.
