The commissioner who spoke to journalists said the figure also included allowances for Islamic clerics who had been posted to various locations across the state to preach “good virtues” throughout the 30 days fasting period, adding that Governor Ibrahim Gaidam had approved 31 feeding centres and 81 designated preaching centres.

He said two clerics including a reciter and an interpreter of the Holy Qur’an were designated for each of the preaching centres.

He said the gesture of providing food at sunset was meant to reduce hardship being faced my less privileged Muslim faithful who find it difficult to afford meal at sunset.

Gulani said jollof rice, kunu, bean cake, dates and meat were being served at the feeding centres, stressing that commissioners have been assigned the responsibility of monitoring the distribution of the breakfast package in their various local government areas.

He said Sharia Committees in all the local government areas had screened the preachers and issued them clearance in order to avoid “teachings that may likely misinform Muslims”.

“The essence is to avoid the Boko Haram experience we had recently. All the preachers have been issued certificate of recognition while security agencies including the SSS and the police have been directed to arrest anyone preaching without clearance”, the commissioner added.

He added that his ministry had gone round the state and sought the support of traditional rulers in order to have “hitch free Ramadan period”.
