Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has subsidized the price of fertilizer from N25,000 to N13,000—a subsidy of 40 per cent in line with his agricultural policy.

Buni made the pronouncement during the flagging-off ceremony of the 2023 cropping season fertiliser sales on Thursday in Damaturu.

The governor said one of the cardinal objectives of his administration was to increase the aggregate agricultural output towards achieving food sufficiency and security, and commodity exports for the improved well-being of Yobe people.

According to him, agriculture remains the main stimulus for providing employment, self-reliance, and income generation to the farming population, adding that his administration remains committed to boosting the sector.

“About 80 per cent of Yobe’s population is engaged in both crop and livestock farming, and our administration has remained committed to exploring more avenues for enhancing agricultural productivity as the main stimulus for providing employment, self-reliance and income generation to the farming population.

“Government procured the commodity at N25,000 per bag. However, in line with our agricultural policy, I now declare a subsidy of 40 per cent, implying that the fertilisers would be sold to our farmers at N13,000 per bag.”

He warned that the government would not condone any act of sabotage through diversion or hoarding of the product to create unnecessary hardships for Yobe people.

“The public is enjoined to monitor and report indecent practices in their areas. Government shall deal ruthlessly with anyone or group who attempts to sabotage this great initiative,” he added.

He demonstrated the commitment of his administration through participation in the AUDA-NEPAD Small Holder farmers’ program, provision of livestock Development Centers, support to irrigation projects and the LAVA program jointly funded by the state and the federal government.
