Farmers in Damaturu have expressed delight at the pattern of rainfall with adequate sunshine for weeding of crops to ensure bumper harvests this year.

The farmers, who spoke with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the rains had been stable, with good spacing which made farmers hopeful.

Alhaji Makinta Bukar, a retired civil servant-turned farmer, said “unlike last year when the rainfall pattern was inconsistent and irregular, it has remained stable this season.”

Malam Musa Mohammed, a peasant farmer, said “farmers were initially apprehensive because of the late arrival of the rains but added that it later became consistent and the crops blossomed steadily.

“Almost every part of the state enjoyed consistent rainfall without damage so far; we have not heard of any case of flood anywhere across the state.”

A peasant farmer, Malam Usman Ali, said new crops had almost matured adding that  “those who planted early would be bracing up for harvests in the next few weeks.”

Another farmer, Malam Maina Suleman, said the timely application of fertiliser to the farms had also made the season promising with high hopes for bumper harvests. (NAN)
