The Yobe State Government has generated N15.9 billion as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in 2025 while pledging to increase the figure in 2026.

The Chairman of the Yobe State Internal Revenue Service (YIRS), Suleiman Bakura, disclosed this during an interview with our reporter in Damaturu.

He said the target was achieved through the automation of revenue collection systems, inter-agency collaboration, and sustained public sensitization to encourage tax compliance.

According to him, the state has aligned its tax collection policies with modern economic realities by deploying digital tools and enhancing staff capacity. These efforts boosted IGR from N11 billion in 2023 to N15.9 billion in 2025.

Bakura explained that upon assuming office in 2024, he focused on addressing leakages and inefficiencies that previously hindered revenue generation, making the N15 billion target achievable.

He further credited the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni for enacting laws aimed at prudent resource management and fiscal stability, noting that recent fiscal performance reports reflect positive outcomes.

However, he lamented that security challenges, particularly the activities of Boko Haram insurgents, have significantly affected tax collection by disrupting infrastructure, damaging businesses, and shrinking the tax base.
