The Yobe State Government plans to establish four remand homes in some local government areas of the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Sports, Social and Community Development, Hon. Barma Shattima, stated this on Wednesday in Damaturu, the state capital.

He said that the ministry was planning to establish four additional remand homes – a custodial centre for child suspects who are awaiting trial – in Damaturu, Nguru, Gashua and Geidam towns.

He noted that the Potiskum remand home was the only functional home in the state as the ones in Nguru and Gashua were dilapidated.

According to him, the project is meant to reduce overcrowding in the existing prisons.

He added that the new remand homes would offer inmates access to education, vocational training and other resources to help them become productive citizens upon release.

The commissioner said the government is spending over N14 million annually on the maintenance of the Potiskum remand home.
