The Yobe State government has been urged to declare  state of emergency on health workers to address their acute shortage at the health facilities across the state.
The state’s team leader for  Women for Health (W4H) Largemu Bukar, made the call in Kano at a two-day programme organized for stakeholders on sustaining foundation year programme (FYP) and other interventions in Yobe State.
According to him, Yobe is one of the states with the lowest number of doctors and midwives in the country, a situation which he said was responsible for the high rate of maternal and child mortality.
National program manager for W4H, Dr Fatima Lami Adamu, said DFID introduced the project to increase the number of female health workers in the selected states where the programme is being implemented.
Speaker Yobe State House of Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Dala Dogo, said government has already awarded contracts for the renovation of the state’s general hospitals, saying government would do its best to sustain the programme started by W4H so that provision of female health workers in the state would be sustained even after the winding up of the project which started three years ago.
