The Yobe State Arabic and Islamic Education Board (AISEB) has launched its local government-level Qur’anic recitation competition in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently.

Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in the United Kingdom. He was buried on Tuesday in his country home, Daura, Katsina State.

Dr. Umar Abubakar, Executive Secretary of AISEB, said the timing of the competition coincided with the former president’s passing, prompting a special prayer for the repose of his soul.

“We use this opportunity to offer a special prayer, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him mercy. The entire reward from this two-week-long competition is dedicated to him, in recognition of his contributions to the nation,” Abubakar said.

As part of the event, 99 hygiene kits were distributed to Almajiri pupils, and awards were presented to 300 Islamiyya pupils who excelled in Qur’anic memorisation.

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Plan International.

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, stressed the critical role of Qur’anic education in nurturing moral and intellectual values.

“This initiative aligns with our broader efforts to promote Qur’anic education in Yobe and across Nigeria. Qur’anic learning is fundamental to shaping our values, guiding our actions, and preserving our religious identity,” Governor Buni said.

Ms. Halima Jibril, Project Officer at Plan International’s Yobe Field Office, explained that the hygiene support initiative was driven by the need to improve living conditions for Almajiri children.

“Plan International has partnered with AISEB since 2019 to support community schools and provide educational resources. This year, we focused on hygiene, distributing kits that include antiseptic soap, Vaseline, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other essential items,” she said.

She added that poor hygiene remains a significant concern among Almajiri children, and such interventions are essential for promoting their health and overall well-being.
