Yobe: Lawyers Urge Dr. Kagu Abubakar to Contest Nguru, Machina, Yusufari, and Karasuwa rep Seat

A coalition of lawyers from Nguru, Machina, Yusufari, and Karasuwa Federal Constituency has called on the immediate past Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Scholarship Board, Associate Professor Abubakar Bukar Kagu, to contest for a seat in the National Assembly in the forthcoming elections.

Speaking on behalf of the forum, Barrister Salisu Lawan Nguru stated that more than 100 lawyers, including the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), former chairmen of the association, and members of the Young Lawyers Forum in the state, have endorsed the call for Dr. Kagu to run for the House of Representatives.

“Today, we are gathered in solidarity to call on one of our own to aspire and serve. Over 100 lawyers are here with us, including the current NBA chairman, former chairmen, and members of the Young Lawyers Forum, all supporting this call for Dr. Abubakar Bukar Kagu to contest in the upcoming election,” he said.

Barrister Nguru described Dr. Kagu as an accomplished legal scholar, administrator, and senior member of the Bar.

“When our colleagues from across the state suggested that this project should be handled by us, they were right. Dr. Kagu is our son, friend, brother, and colleague and one of the leading voices from our Constituency.”

“Since 2009, he has diligently served Yobe State in various capacities. He began as a magistrate, where his performance was remarkable. He later pursued further education and returned to join the Faculty of Law at Yobe State University, contributing significantly to its growth and development. He subsequently served as Executive Secretary of the State Scholarship Board.

“He was also the Chairman of the NBA Damaturu branch in 2019. Throughout his career from his time on the bench, to his contributions to legal education, to his leadership within the NBA, Dr. Kagu has consistently demonstrated commitment to service and has never lost touch with the Bar.

“You may recall that in 2022, he aspired to represent our constituency in the House of Representatives. Although he was not successful then, his outing and votes were remarkable and had our full support and prayers. Now is the time, especially as our nation craves for true and competent representation.”

He emphasized the importance of strong legislative representation at a critical moment in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“This is a period in our national life when discussions must be rigorous before becoming laws. It is a time for altruism and for putting forward the best candidates in the interest of both the region and the nation.

“So far, we have seen limited interest in this seat, and we believe we already have a capable, prepared, and well-equipped candidate in Dr. Kagu. That is why we are calling on him to step forward with our full and unwavering support.

“The response from colleagues has been overwhelming. Many who could not attend have expressed their support from afar. This is only the beginning, we will continue to engage stakeholders and leaders to make this a collective project for our community and the nation.

“We are presenting a seasoned professional with proven experience, a strong track record, and a commitment to service. We cannot afford to overlook such capable leadership.”

Barrister Salisu Nguru further called on professional bodies and constituents across Nguru, Machina, Yusufari, and Karasuwa to support Dr. Kagu’s candidacy.

“We will present our case to all relevant stakeholders and do our utmost to gain their support. We are confident that Dr. Kagu will be a worthy ambassador of the Bar and the people. He is someone who will listen, guide, support, and serve effectively,” he added.
