Friday Yohanna emerged as the overall champion of the 2026 Mama Eunice Jiya Memorial Golf Tournament after delivering an outstanding performance at the Minna Cantonment Golf Club.
Playing off handicap 10, Yohanna returned a score of 78 gross and 68 net to secure the coveted title at the ninth edition of the championship held on Saturday.
The tournament, played in a stroke-play format, has grown significantly since its inception as a club match-play competition in 2004, attracting golfers from across the country.
Speaking after his victory, Yohanna expressed delight at winning one of the nation’s prestigious golf events and dedicated the achievement to his supporters and the organisers.
“I am delighted to emerge overall winner in such a prestigious tournament. The competition was highly competitive, and I thank God for this memorable victory,” he said.
He praised the organisers for sustaining the event and preserving the legacy of the late Mama Eunice Jiya through the promotion of golf.
The Immediate Past Captain of TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club (TYB-IGRCC), Maj.-Gen. S.S. Jiya, thanked participants, sponsors and well-wishers for honouring his late mother’s memory. He described the impressive turnout as a testament to the values of love, humility and service for which she was known.
Dr Jonathan Jiya also expressed appreciation to all contributors, noting that the memorial tournament had evolved into a platform for fostering friendship, unity and sportsmanship among golfers nationwide.
Patron of the Minna Cantonment Golf Club, Amb. J.A. Gana, commended the organisers for maintaining the tournament’s high standards, describing it as one of the most anticipated golf events in Nigeria.
According to the Vice Captain of TYB-IGRCC, Dr Ali Peters, no fewer than 168 golfers participated in this year’s championship, reflecting its growing national appeal.
Among other winners, Elizabeth Onwuka claimed the Ladies Veterans title, while Dibu Ojerinde triumphed in the Men’s Super Veterans category. Sunday Felix won the Category One gross title, and Shamsudin Tanko secured the Category Two net prize.
The championship concluded with a colourful reception and dinner hosted by Maj.-Gen. S.S. Jiya in Minna.
