An international conference aimed at standardising the Yoruba language orthography is set to take place on February 20, 2024. Organised by the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture (Yoruba World Centre) in collaboration with the DAWN Commission, WIKIPEDIA, and other stakeholders, the event seeks to facilitate the smooth implementation of the New National Language Policy in Yoruba Studies.

Chaired by Professor Oluwole Oyetade of the University of Ibadan, the organising committee has initiated extensive consultations with educators, learners, language users, and relevant government bodies in Southwest, Kwara, and Kogi States. Comprising representatives from various Yoruba language associations and stakeholders, the committee’s mandate extends beyond orthographic standardisation to include the joint commemoration of International Mother Language Day.

Professor Oyetade emphasised the importance of establishing a universally accepted orthography for Yoruba, citing past discrepancies and the language’s growing global recognition. Additionally, the committee aims to foster unity among Yoruba-speaking states by orchestrating the first joint celebration of International Mother Language Day on February 21.

Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State will inaugurate the Yoruba Orthography Committee, while Governor Seyi Makinde will serve as the Chief Host for the two-day event.
