Young lawyers valentine call!

February 14 is a day the world celebrates love in the annual calendar; a day loved ones surprise each other with gifts and special treatment, marked for sharing of laughter and happiness with family and friends. It is on this day 2012 that some young wigs were considered fit and proper to be called to the Nigerian Bar, it is three years down the road and the journey has not being without its up and down but the Almighty has kept us alive to celebrate the moment. “It’s funny how time flies”, some are company secretaries, some employed by government agencies and institutions, multinationals, some have their own law firms as there is no restriction to the number of years one must spend in the Bar to be eligible to establish a law firm, and others employed by law firms as advocates in chamber.
One thing however is common, being a legal practitioner is a noble feeling and as the day goes by we learn to be better gentlemen and good lawyers to the society.
It’s like yesterday we were using scenarios to draft originating process, deeds, agreements etc in Nigerian Law School and today real life situations are what we deal with on daily basis in our various offices, which begs the question, are we still at the same level we were three years ago or have we climbed the ladder a little? Is there any three (3) years post call lawyer that doesn’t know how to draft a legal document? If there is, please wake up time waits for no one, the turf has been turbulent ever since the existence of the legal profession, it’s how one navigates through that really counts.
To this young wig, the society needs to understand and appreciate by our interaction and dress sense that status has changed from law student to Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court.  There should be public confidence on the competence of seeing a legal brief through, by now we ought to be able to properly handle a client interview; no one is talking about perfection in the business just steady and sure growth in the profession.
As Vj Adams likes to say, enjoy what you do and soon work would become play. There is no doubt that the legal profession is tasking yet financially unbearable to a young wig, this should not leave us stagnant in a position for too long. Dress smart, clean and presentable, read more,  learn more, for litigation lawyers study case files before going to court room, mingle with the society and increase client base.
The journey may look bleak but with hard work, dedication and commitment light is sure at the end of the tunnel just keep moving forward. Engage more in NBA activities especially the Young Lawyers Forum {YLF}, pay practicing fees and branch dues to get eligible for decisive moments like branch elections, efforts should be geared towards making relevance in the legal environment. If finance is holding some of us down, source for alternative income using skills already harnessed, a lawyer can earn money through diverse ventures aside going to court.
The idea is to grow and become better as the year dawns upon us. A  young wig who chooses to stay on the sidelines and watch might find it difficult when we open our eyes tomorrow and its 10 years already at Bar, by then navigating the turf would be more turbulent than it is today, be wise, know what you want and go for it.
To the Valentine call mates {Bar. Chinwe Ezenwa & Bar. Ikechukwu Orji} who found love and would tie the nuptial knot on 21st March 2015 in Anambra State, congratulations, the Almighty shall bless your matrimonial home with lovely and obedient children {Amen}.We are not without tears, Lawi Danjuma Chibege Esq who graduated Nigerian Law school that year with the best result, was called back home very early in the journey. Brother, friend and learned colleague we love and miss you dearly, may you continue to rest in peace {your memory lives on in our hearts}.To those of us alive to see this joyful moment, let’s continue to give God glory!
