The Coalition of Yoruba Students and Youth Movement (COYSYM), a coalition of Yoruba youth and student organisations across Nigeria, has called on the Federal Government to safeguard the Dangote Refinery and ensure its continued operation and success.

The coalition includes groups such as the National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS), Yoruba Council Worldwide, and the Coalition of Osun State Youth and Students Association (COSSYA), among others.

In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Benedict Adetunji, and Secretary, Comrade Busari Abdulraman, COYSYM described the refinery as “a world-class facility that stands as the pride of Nigeria and the African continent.”

The group said the refinery, located in the Yoruba region, represents “a symbol of industrial hope, self-reliance, and national rebirth,” and called for its protection and support.

While commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as “bold and visionary leadership,” particularly in the removal of fuel subsidy, COYSYM said the success of the Dangote Refinery is vital to achieving the administration’s goal of transforming Nigeria into a production-driven economy.

“No nation grows by importing what it can produce. The only path to true economic revival lies in increasing our export capacity and reducing unnecessary importation,” the statement said.

The group urged the Federal Government to prioritise crude oil allocation to Nigerian-owned refineries at fair and competitive rates and to promote policies that support local refining and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.

COYSYM also called on stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to work together to strengthen the nation’s energy security, create employment opportunities, and enhance Nigeria’s industrial growth.
