The involvement of youths in the agricultural sector has been identified as a solution to the current security challenges facing the country.

This was suggested at a policy dialogue on Gender Responsive Budgeting in Kaduna,  organised by Yiaga Africa, a non-profit civic hub committed to the promotion of democratic governance, human rights and civic engagement.

Director of Finance and Account at the Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture, Yahaya Saidu, appealed to the youths to take advantage of the various agricultural policies for self-reliance.

According to him, Nigeria can sustain itself through agriculture and provide economic prosperity as well as security to its citizens. He appealed to women to also take advantage of the opportunities provided in the sector despite religious and cultural factors that hinder women from taking part in agriculture.

A representative of Yiaga Africa, Olaniyan Sanusi, while presenting a policy brief said implementing projects that seek to empower youths through agriculture, and strengthening the agricultural value chain will address factors fuelling insecurity and conflict in rural communities.
