The Youth Party has elected Abdulrahman Abubakar as its national chairman.

Abubakar, who emerged at the party’s national convention held in Abuja on Saturday, said indiscipline, poor visibility, weak mobilisation and funding challenges remain major obstacles confronting the party.

“We know what our challenges are. We are still struggling with our visibility, finance, communication, mobilization and discipline. These are growing pains that we have to address,” he said.

The new chairman said his emergence followed what he described as the successful completion of efforts to deepen the party’s grassroots presence through congresses conducted across 26 states.

“My election also underscore the successful completion of our efforts to cascade our Party to the grassroots with our hugely successful Ward, Local Government and state congresses that took place across the Country in 26 states,” he added.

Abubakar said the party was founded on the ideals of accountability, transparency and reform driven politics, rather than ethnic and religious sentiments.

“We embarked on this journey to expand the democratic space based on the ideals of accountability and transparency, politics of reason and reform as against the usual anger and populism; and, politics devoid of ethnic and religious sentiments. We are for One Nigeria,” he noted.

He explained that the party would continue to adopt its candidates through its One Member One Vote (OMOV) model, which he said reflects its commitment to internal democracy.

“We are committed to adopting our policies and candidates for public office through our adoption of OMOV (One Member One Vote),” he explained.

The chairman outlined key priorities for his administration, including the conduct of free and fair primaries, amendment of the party’s constitution and manifesto, enforcement of party discipline and preparations for the 2027 elections.

“I believe no goal can be achieved without discipline,” he said.

Abubakar added that the party was targeting victory in at least 10 legislative seats across the country in the next general election.

“A successful 2027 general election with victory in atleast 10 legislative offices across the country,” he added.

He also described leadership within the party as a collective responsibility.

“I intend to lead as 1st among equals. It’s a team sport. I cannot clap with one hand,” he said.
