Some youths from Okpoama kingdom have begun a manual dredging and canalisation of blocked channels to create access to communities in Brass Local government area of Bayelsa State.
This is due to the failure of government to dredge rivers and creeks to create an access way in the area.
Brass Local Government is one of the areas in Bayelsa State that are yet to be linked by road, while major oil multinationals operating in the area are not helping the communities.
Speaking to Daily Trust on Sunday, the youth president of Okpoama Kingdom, who led the youths on river canaliSation, Engr. Seiyefa Felix Ben-Basuo, said since both federal and state government as well as multinational oil companies are not helping them to create access routes, they needed to carry their work manually to assuage the suffering of the people from Brass in getting to Nembe and Yenagoa, the state capital.
He said though the existing water route is very far to access and deep, after the canalisation of the normal 1.5 kilometre route, which they are working on, it will help the people access other parts of the state, especially Nembe in a limited time and prevent danger of boat mishap.
According to him, the youths’ movement in the kingdom resorted to help to ease the suffering of the people of Brass LGA in accessing other parts of the state.
He disclosed that the canalisation project is expected to reduce travel time from Okpoama to Nembe by about eight minutes on the water way.
