They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Onitsha that the move was to know why Gov. Peter Obi had not inaugurated the facility, completed five months ago.

NAN learnt that the stadium was started at the same time with the one in Onitsha North Local Government which was commissioned a year ago and named Chuba Ikpeazu Memorial Stadium.

Echezona Obasi, spokesman for the youths, said that their patience was running out and that they would embark on protest soon.

“Youth in the council area believe that non-commissioning of the stadium amounted to injustice and indifference to their yearnings for sport development.

“A lot of talents are wasting here while playgrounds for exercises and sporting meets had been sold to traders to build shops.

“Some youths are talented in sports but have no opportunities to develop because of lack of facilities and they have taken to smoking Indian hemp,’’ he lamented.

Obasi, founder of Black Stars FC of Onitsha, wondered why the government had not commissioned the stadium for the benefit of youths.

Another sports fan, Afam Chimezie, urged the governor to remember that providing sports facilities was one of his election promises which he should deliver.

When contacted, Dr Cyprian Amuzie, Anambra State Director of Sports (Logistics), said that the government would commission the stadium “very soon”. (NAN)
