Christmas trees made from recycled materials
As the Christmas breeze is blowing so nice and cool, a tall greenish Christmas tree made from pet bottles, and another made of old tyres have been a beautiful sight to behold at the popular Allen Bus Stop in Lagos State.
These eco-friendly Christmas trees, created by the Foundation for a Better Environment (F.A.B.E) on behalf of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and its sister agency Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) were strategically positioned at the Johnson-Jakande-Tinubu (JJT) Park; Alausa Secretariat setback; LAWMA Head Office Garden, Ijora; Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (opposite 7up) and Allen Avenue Traffic Intersection, Ikeja.
Lagosians have continued to stop by these creations in admiration and to take photos; particularly at night when the lights laced inside them are put on.
The use of pet bottles and discarded old tyres to build eco-friendly Christmas trees demonstrates to residents that waste materials could be used to creatively improve the aesthetics of the environment.
According to the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Mr Ibrahim Odumboni, the authority chose to promote the recycling initiative, by building the Christmas trees from recyclable items as a way of educating residents on the importance of engaging in recycling, especially during this festive season.
On how they were made, Odumboni explained that over 12,000 plastic bottles and 60 tyres of various sizes were used in producing the yuletide trees, noting that the materials ordinarily would have become environmental nuisance if not used to build the trees.
Some individuals seen taking pictures by these creations described the initiative as very innovative; saying more of these should be done to save the environment.
Mr Victor Taiwo who works along Allen Road stressed the need for the government to encourage Nigerians, particularly students from primary to tertiary levels, to imbibe the culture of recycling waste, rather than allowing them to deface the environment.
Speaking on the authority’s plans for the festive season, the LAWMA boss reiterated the readiness to provide effective waste management services during and after the Christmas and New Year festivities, adding that PSP operators have been mandated to provide quality services to all tenements, even as the agency would also be on ground to provide back-up services.
To ensure that all parts of the metropolis received the needed attention, during and after the festive period, he disclosed that the agency had been divided into operational districts, making it easier for waste collection and turn-around time to be increased.
He urged the populace to bag their wastes, and shun acts of indiscriminate waste disposal capable of defacing the environment, blocking drainage channels, and exposing their surroundings to various hazards.
