A traditional wrestler, Usaini Yunusa Shaho, from Sabon Layi, Awak, has expressed satisfaction with his performance at a traditional wrestling competition organised to promote cultural heritage in Kaltungo, Gombe State.
The tournament, which was organised under the leadership of the Mai Kaltungo, Engineer Saleh Muhammad, brought together wrestlers from different communities across the area.
Shaho emerged champion after defeating Lukman Ali Dodo in a keenly contested final that attracted a large turnout of spectators.
Speaking after the event, Shaho said he has spent many years in traditional wrestling, describing it as the craft he understands and practises best.
He said he had recorded several victories at various competitions across the region, winning trophies and cash prizes.
According to him, despite his regular participation in annual wrestling events, lack of sponsorship has limited his exposure.
He commended the organisers for providing a platform that promotes indigenous sports, cultural values and unity among the youths.
However, Lukman Ali Dodo, who finished second, expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the contest, alleging bias in officiating.
He called on referees to be fair and neutral in future competitions, even when such events are organised mainly for entertainment.
In another bout, Jatau Nagudu edged Nura Musa Awak in a keenly contested battle to emerge victorious. At the end of the tournament, the champion, Shaho, received N150,000, while Dodo and Jatau Nagudu received N100,000 and N50,000 respectively.
Chairman of the organising committee, Muhammad Dantata Ndus, called on the state government to develop the venue of the event, Panton community, Ture area, into a recreational centre.
