The children of the Islamic Movement Nigeria (IMN) on Thursday besieged the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Abuja demanding the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky.

The kids in their hundreds, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to punish those who allegedly took part in the December 2015 killing of their parents. 

Kumail Ibrahim Musa, 15, who spoke on behalf of the group, requested the president to obey court order for the release of Zakzaky and other detained members of the sect. 

He said the attack created many orphans and widows, while many of Zakzaky’s biological children, a nephew and others were killed and their properties destroyed. 

“Our catcall is against the illegal detention of our leader, our pride, Sheikh Ibraheem el-Zakzaky. It is against the continuous missing of our parents, our guardians; the golden apples of our eyes,” he said.

In his response, the Director of Protection and Investigation in the NHRC, Abdulrahman Yakubu, pledged the commitment of the commission to protect human rights of Nigerians. He said the panel on adherence to the military Rules of Engagement will soon submit its report to the president. 

While noting the right of the children to protest peacefully, he charged them to take up activities that will enable them become useful members of the society.
