Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has flagged off the 2026 wet season fertiliser distribution programme with the distribution of more than 120 truckloads of fertilisers and other agricultural inputs to farmers across the state.

Speaking at the launch of the programme at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau on Friday, the governor said the initiative was aimed at boosting agricultural production, strengthening food security and improving farmers’ livelihoods.

Under the programme, the state government distributed 72,000 bags of fertiliser, 200,000 litres of herbicides and 100 crop residue crushers.

Other items distributed include 100 grass choppers, 100 feed milling machines, improved pasture seeds, 20 motorcycles and 20 mobile phones for agricultural extension workers.

Lawal described Zamfara as one of Nigeria’s major agricultural states, saying agriculture remains the backbone of the state’s economy and a critical tool for tackling poverty, unemployment and insecurity.

He said the government was committed to transforming agriculture from subsistence farming to a modern, technology-driven and market-oriented sector through improved access to inputs, mechanisation, irrigation, extension services and climate-smart farming practices.

According to him, improved security across parts of the state has enabled more communities to return to farming, while the government would continue to provide the necessary support to sustain agricultural activities.

The governor said the administration had partnered with the federal government and development agencies through programmes such as FADAMA III, NG-CARES, SPIN, ZACADEP, SAPZ and IFAD-supported projects to improve agricultural productivity.

He added that the fertilisers and farm inputs would be distributed across the 147 political wards in the state’s 14 local government areas, with each ward receiving 340 bags of fertiliser while each local government would receive 8,000 litres of herbicides.
