Zamfara expands medical outreach, introduces uterine prolapse surgeries

The Zamfara State Special Modified Medical Outreach Programme has commenced a new phase targeting 350 additional beneficiaries across the state, with the introduction of uterine prolapse surgeries.

Officials said the latest intervention marks a major expansion of the programme’s healthcare services, particularly for women with complex medical conditions.

Chairman of the outreach committee, Prof. Isma’il Mungadi, is personally leading and performing the surgeries in the current phase.

The programme, which operated across the 14 local government areas between August 2023 and November 2025, reportedly carried out 4,795 surgical procedures for 4,185 patients.

More than 1,200 residents also received free treatment for hypertension and diabetes during the period.

Authorities said the outreach addressed medical conditions such as vesicovaginal fistula (VVF), cataracts, groin swellings and other surgical cases, including rare conditions like intersex anomalies and undescended testes.

Officials added that the initiative recorded a surgical success rate of 99.98 per cent.

Beyond direct treatment, the programme was said to have strengthened healthcare delivery by improving surgical capacity in hospitals, motivating medical personnel and upgrading medical facilities with modern equipment.

The government said the new phase would further bridge healthcare gaps and provide specialised care for vulnerable residents across the state.
