The First Lady of Zamfara State, Hurriya Dauda Lawal, has completed the distribution of 50,000 Ramadan food packages to vulnerable households across the state’s 14 local government areas.

The distribution exercise, described by officials as one of the largest humanitarian interventions coordinated by the Office of the First Lady in the state, ended with a closing ceremony in Gusau.

The outreach tour began in Shinkafi Local Government Area and Zurmi Local Government Area before moving through Birnin Magaji Local Government Area and Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, as well as Gummi Local Government Area and Bukkuyum Local Government Area.

The exercise also covered Anka Local Government Area and Talata Mafara Local Government Area, before proceeding to Maradun Local Government Area and Bakura Local Government Area, and later Maru Local Government Area and Bungudu Local Government Area, before concluding in Tsafe Local Government Area and Gusau.

Speaking during the exercise, the first lady said each of the food packages contained 20kg bags of rice, beans, maize and millet, as well as 5kg of sugar, spaghetti, cooking oil, salt and clothing materials for women.

She said the intervention was designed to cushion the impact of rising food prices and provide relief to families observing the Ramadan fast.

Lawal said ward-level distribution committees were inaugurated across the state to ensure transparency, accountability and community participation in the process.

“These committees worked closely with local government chairmen and community stakeholders to identify deserving beneficiaries and supervise the distribution process,” she said, adding that her office maintained zero tolerance for diversion or favouritism.

She also supervised a special intervention in her capacity as ambassador of the state’s Zakkat and Endowment Board, targeting widows, orphans and other vulnerable groups.

According to her, beneficiaries under the category received 25kg bags of rice, ₦20,000 cash support and clothing materials to ease hardship during the fasting period.

The first lady expressed appreciation to the governor, Dauda Lawal, for supporting programmes aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

Meanwhile, Lawal also launched Ramadan relief packages for 1,000 vulnerable households under the Ibrahim Bello Foundation, established in honour of the late Emir of Gusau, Ibrahim Bello.

The distribution ceremony was held at the Emir’s Palace in Gusau.

Chairman of the foundation, Bashir Garba, said the beneficiaries included widows, orphans, internally displaced persons and people living with disabilities.

He said the packages contained rice and clothing materials for both male and female beneficiaries.

Lawal commended the foundation for supporting vulnerable members of the community and reaffirmed the commitment of her office to collaborate with organisations and agencies providing assistance to the less privileged.

Officials of the foundation also briefed the first lady on its activities in education, healthcare, community development and poverty alleviation, as well as its plan to expand partnerships with international donors.
