Governor Dauda Lawal has constituted a transition committee to ensure the smooth take-off of the newly established Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology (FUHST), Tsafe, Zamfara State.

In a statement, the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, said the committee is mandated to oversee the seamless transfer of structural facilities, integration of existing students, and absorption of eligible staff of the College of Health Sciences and Technology (CHST), Tsafe, into the new university.

He said the committee will review and verify the academic status, transcripts and programme structures of students currently enrolled at CHST. It will also recommend appropriate programmes in line with Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) requirements, National Universities Commission (NUC) guidelines and the university’s internal regulations.

Nakwada added that the committee will assess staff qualifications, ranks and experience to determine suitability for absorption into the new institution in line with NUC staffing standards and the university’s conditions of service.

He said the committee will further propose adequate land for future expansion of FUHST and examine the possible relocation of the College of Health Sciences and Technology to another part of the state.

The committee is chaired by Prof. Lawal S. Bilbis, with Prof. Bashir Kaka, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), as Co-chair. Other members include the Commissioners for Education, Health, and Housing; Chairmen of the Governing Councils of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic and the School of Health Technology, Tsafe; the Special Adviser on Infrastructure and Urban Renewal, Dr Shehu Liman; the University Librarian, Malam Yusuf Hamisu Yelwa; and the University Registrar, Dr Abubakar Mohammad Gusau.

The Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs, Mukhtar Rabiu, will serve as Secretary, while the Director at the Office of the Head of Service, Dep. Secretary, and Hibban Buhari will serve as Assistant Secretary.

It will be recalled that during a Senate public hearing in May 2024, the Zamfara State Government pledged to donate the entire CHST Tsafe structures to serve as the permanent site of the new university—an action that underscored Governor Lawal’s commitment to accelerating educational development in the state.
