The Zamfara State Government has concluded plans to extend the vacation of its state-owned higher institutions to January 2026 due to rising security threats across the state.

In a statement during an interview at the FAZAMSS Week held at Gusau Guest House, the Commissioner for Education, Malam Wadatau Madawaki, said the decision was taken after reviewing recent bandit attacks on schools.

Madawaki said the government had already implemented several measures to prevent attacks, especially at night when schools are most vulnerable.

“As you know, these people attack schools in the night while people are sleeping, and we had already taken action of closing boarding schools since. All our schools are day schools, and where schools were classified as red, we closed them down,” he said.

The commissioner explained that the only boarding facilities in the state are in the tertiary institutions, and their resumption date would be shifted pending security review.

“The vacation of our state higher institutions will end this December, but we are looking at the possibility of shifting it to January to assess the security situation before they return,” he added.

Speaking at the event, the National President of FAZAMSS, Comrade Nasiru Gamargiwa, commended Governor Dauda Lawal for prioritising the education sector and supporting student development.

FAZAMSS Week, organised in collaboration with NUZAMSS, aims to correct the negative image of students’ unionism and reposition it as a platform for leadership training and meaningful youth engagement.

Also speaking, the Guest Speaker, Dr. Aminu Idris—represented by the Head of Public Administration Department, Dr. AbdulRa’uf Abdullahi—urged students to embrace innovation and self-development.

“Look beyond Zamfara and create something unique to market to the world. Invest in your personal development,” he said.

He challenged students to pursue ideas that go beyond material pursuit.

“Challenge yourself beyond looking for money to ride exotic cars. Own Zamfara State and take the challenge,” Dr. AbdulRa’uf added.

The guest speaker further commended the state government for its ICT-driven development efforts, noting that Zamfara youths have the intellectual capacity to transform the state.

Governor Dauda Lawal, represented by the Commissioner for Education, launched the third edition of the FAZAMSS magazine during the event.
